The Glorified Cord

A concept manifesto
Related Items:
Most lamps either hide their cords or just leave the cord dangling like an unused appendage. These lamps are not acknowledging that without their cords, without their two groups of copper strands, they would be dark. It seems most lamp designers are above the base functionality of what a cord does and is. The treat the hole that the cord mysteriously emerges from as a service entrance for the maintenance crew. The cord is only allowed to enter through the back door, out of sight and, they hope, out of mind. The glorified cord series of lamps elevates the lowly cord to the center of attention. After all the only three essential ingredients for a functioning lamp are:
  • 1. A socket for the light bulb
  • 2. A light bulb
  • 3. A cord to conduct the electricity
These three things have evolved over the years to become safer, more durable and easier to use. I am not trying to improve upon these things. I am just trying to take a more honest approach in their assembly together to form a lamp. The main bulk of the lamp does a few useful things. It is a means of supporting and elevating the socket/bulb to a beneficial height. The base usually also helps to keep the hot bulb away from flammable materials thus making the lamp safer. The last thing it does is that it provides a continuous path for the cord to reach the socket. These are all important functions. Why hide any of them?
