Thick First Bike - side view

This is Thick Number One. It is a combination of a mountain trials frame and a freestyle frame. This bike is heavily influenced by New York City. Its good for riding off rocks in Central Park, it can be used to grind rails in lower Manhattan, and it will take you from uptown to down because its got gears.

Detail of the dropout area
This frame has manly 1/4" dropouts. The rectangular stays are 1" by 1/2" by 0.035". Note the cable guide on the seatstay. Before the nexus hub was proven to be reliable, We were skeptical and made provisions for the traditional style derailleur. The Nexus works but as you can see below two years later the rider wanted a change.

Now it has a derailleur.
Yes it is the same bike. The fork is different and we added a rear derailleur. The dropout was large enough that a hole could easily be drilled and tapped. This is one derailleur hanger that is not going to bend.

Detail of the dropout
Derailleurs have good points and bad points. Notice the protective chainstay wrap that was not needed with a Nexus hub. On the good side, this setup is lighter and has quicker freewheel engagement. The derailleur and the smaller chainring make the bike better for hopping trials but not as good for jumping or fast riding.
